HELP KEEP OUR HAURAKI GULF PEST-FREE
To protect this precious environment, all passengers must carefully check and clean their gear for pests before travelling.
-
The Hauraki Gulf is a nationally significant marine park, home to some of New Zealand’s rarest and most endangered species — including the Chevron skink, Pāteke, Duvaucel’s gecko, and Kākāriki.
Many of the islands are pest-free or partially pest-free, providing safe havens where wildlife is beginning to flourish naturally. But these environments are fragile — and we need your help to protect them.
-
Unwanted pests can hitch a ride in or on your footwear, gear, or boat.
Rats can squeeze through gaps as small as 12 mm.
Mice need only 7 mm.
Insects can hide in bags.
Weeds, seeds, and soil cling to clothes and shoes.
These invaders can:
Eat native birds, eggs, reptiles, and insects
Compete with native species for food and space
Spread diseases like kauri dieback
Turn pristine habitats into weed-covered wastelands
-
Please prepare for your trip by following these steps:
Pack Food Securely
Use sealed plastic containers for all food items.
If using cardboard boxes, make sure they are fully closed and taped shut to prevent pest entry.
Clean Footwear & Gear
Check all footwear for soil, seeds, or organic debris.
Clean gear thoroughly, especially items used outdoors.
Inspect Camping & Overnight Equipment
Carefully inspect tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and any gear that’s been in storage.
Look for hidden insects or rodents.
Check Plants & Soil Items
Inspect seedlings, potting mix, and any plant matter.
Remove any insects, eggs, soil clumps, or hitchhiking pests.
Seal Everything Up
After packing, seal bags, boxes, and containers tightly.
Keep them closed and secure until you arrive at your destination.
